Q. Who has the Mitzvah to put up a Mezuzah?
A. Every Jew, man or woman have the Mitzvah to place a Mezuzah on their door. It is best for the homeowner to affix the Mezuzah and say the blessings. If that is not possible, any Jew, over the age of Bar or Bas Mitzvah who understands the details, may affix the Mezuzah on the homeowner’s behalf. Although a woman is not eligible to write a Mezuzah* she is permitted to affix it and make the Brachah. The Mezuzah is an obligation for both Jewish men and women. Women are obligated as well because it is not Mitzvah bound to time. The Mitzvah/obligation of Mezuzah is both by day and night every day of the year. In addition, the reward for Mezuzah is long life, which is something that women should benefit from as well. *( Mezuzah is compared to Tefillin and only one who has the obligation to wear Tefillin may write Tefillin, and women are exempt from wearing Tefillin because it is a Mitzvah which is bound to time. Tefillin are worn by day but not at night; as well, Tefillin are only worn on weekdays not Shabbos /Shabbat or Yom Tov/Holidays). |
